Secondary education in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina

After completing their primary education, young people in AP Vojvodina may choose from a range of grammar schools, vocational schools, mixed schools, art schools and secondary schools for education of students with developmental impairments and disabilities. In total, there are 119 regular public secondary schools and 10 secondary schools for students with developmental impairments and disabilities in 40 local self-governments.
Within regular secondary education, classes are held in the Serbian, Hungarian, Slovak, Romanian, Rusyn and Croatian language. Pursuant to the Law on Protection of Rights and Freedoms of National Minorities, persons belonging to the Roma national minority also exercise the status of a national minority. However, teaching in this language is not conducted in secondary schools in the territory of AP Vojvodina. Teaching in national minority languages is conducted in 17 local self-governments, i.e. In 41 secondary school: 8 grammar schools, 24 vocational schools, 7 mixed schools and 2 art schools.
Grammar schools, which may be general and specialised, provide four-year long education for further education in higher education institutions.
Secondary vocational schools provide three or four-year long education for work and further education. Specialised and master craftsman education may also be acquired, in one or two-year programmes, along with other forms of vocational education: education for work lasting for two-years, professional development and training lasting up to one year. Teaching in these schools also comprises practical work.
Secondary art schools provide four-year long education for work and further education in higher education institutions and are attended by students with special aptitudes for music, ballet or fine arts.
In addition to grammar school education, mixed schools provide vocational education or education in arts. This reduces the need to establish satellite classes outside central vocational or grammar schools.
Secondary schools for education of students with developmental impairments and disabilities provide secondary education for the period of two, three or four years within multiple fields of work, primarily providing the training for specific crafts.
The Provincial Secretariat for Education, Regulations, Administration and National Minorities – National Communities has established that in the territory of AP Vojvodina, there are 26 private secondary schools which have met the compliance criteria in terms of the necessary space, equipment, teaching aids and number of teachers and expert associates, required for the commencement of secondary school education.
