The enrollment of children in the first grade begins

The enrollment of children in the first grade of primary school for the 2021/2022 school year begins today, on Thursday, 1 April 2021.

This year, parents can also electronically schedule an appointment for enrollment and testing of a child in the first grade of primary school, by launching the eScheduling service on the eGovernment Portal, which has been available since 22 March.

The First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development, Branko Ružić, stated that parents no longer had to bring the documentation for enrollment, but that the school obtained those documents electronically.

In this way, we saved parents’ time and money and provided them with the necessary support at this important time. "Only during the first week, parents have scheduled an appointment for about 14 percent of future first-graders", said Minister Ružić.

It is enough for a parent to schedule an appointment electronically, bring their child at the scheduled time and have only an ID card on them. The school obtains all the necessary documents electronically - birth certificate, certificate of residence, certificate of preschool programme attendance and certificate of completed medical examination, i.e. medical certificate. If the examination was performed by a private physician, it is necessary for the parent to bring that certificate to the school.

Every child who is at least six and a half years and at most, seven and a half years old, until the beginning of the school year is enrolled in the first grade. In the 2021/22 school year, enrollment in the first grade is mandatory for all children born in the period from 1 March 2014 to 28 February 2015.

The interview with the child at school is performed by a psychologist, i.e. a school pedagogue in the child's native language, using standard procedures and instruments, recommended by the competent institution i.e. an authorised professional organisation.

According to the data of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, 66,864 children turned mandatory age to enroll in the first grade of primary school in 2021/2022 school year, and the official data of the SORS on the coverage of children will be available at the end of April 2021.

Student enrollment lasts until 31 May, but schools can enroll even after that date.

If a parent has additional questions regarding the appointment, they can contact the contact center of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development at the following phone number: 011 / 73-505-57 from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.
