Secondary education in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina

After primary education, youth in AP Vojvodina can choose from grammar schools, vocational schools, mixed schools, art schools and secondary schools for pupils with developmental disabilities. There are a total of 119 regular secondary schools and 10 secondary schools for pupils with developmental disabilities in 40 local self-governments.
Within regular secondary education, classes are held in Serbian, Hungarian, Slovak, Romanian, Ruthenian and Croatian languages. Pursuant to the Law on Protection of Rights and Freedoms of National Minorities, members belonging to the Roma national minority also exercise the status of a national minority. However, teaching in this language is not conducted in secondary schools in the territory of AP Vojvodina. Classes in national minority languages are held in 17 local self-governments, i.e. 42 secondary schools: 9 grammar schools, 26 vocational schools, 5 mixed schools and 2 art schools.
Grammar schools, which can be general and specialised, provide four-year long education for further education in higher education institutions.
Secondary vocational schools provide three-year long, or four-year long education for work and further education. Specialised one-year long education can also be acquired after secondary education. Teaching in these schools includes practical work.
Secondary art schools provide four-year long education for work and further education in higher education institutions and are attended by students with special aptitudes for music, ballet or fine arts.
In addition to grammar school education, mixed schools provide vocational education or education in arts. This reduces the need to form satellite classes outside original vocational schools or grammar schools.
Secondary schools for pupils with developmental disabilities perform activities of secondary education for the period of one, two or three years within multiple fields of work and, above all, they provide training for specific crafts.
The Provincial Secretariat for Education, Regulations, Administration and National Minorities – National Communities has established that in the territory of AP Vojvodina, there are 23 private secondary schools which have met the compliance criteria in terms of the necessary space, equipment, teaching aids and number of teachers and expert associates, required for the commencement of secondary school education.
